           <h1>What We Do</h1>

           <p>Software Freedom Conservancy is a nonprofit organization

           centered around ethical technology. Our mission is to ensure the

           right to repair, improve and reinstall software. We promote and

           defend these rights through fostering free and open source

           software (FOSS) projects, driving initiatives that actively make

           technology more inclusive, and advancing policy strategies that

             defend FOSS (such as copyleft).</p>

           <p>Our work on <a href="/copyleft-compliance/">copyleft

           compliance</a>, including enforcement of the General Public

           License (GPL), is world-renowned.  We believe fundamentally that

           copyleft licenses are the best tool available today to empower

           users and consumers to take control of their electronic devices,

           liberate themselves from planned obsolesce, and join a free market

           where they choose who provides their software.</p>

           <p>We also believe that FOSS functions best when built by a

           egalitarian community in which hobbyists, volunteers, and

           individuals stand on equal footing with companies and large

           organizations.  Vendor neutrality is simply not enough — as

           that merely makes companies equal to each other and leaves

           hobbyists and volunteers out in the cold.  To foster FOSS creation

           in this manner, we are the <a href="/projects/">non-profit home to

           dozens of member projects and initiatives</a> whom we assist to

           remain transparent and prioritize the public good in their

           development of FOSS.</p>

           <p>Furthermore, diversity and inclusion is a critical component to

           egalitarian FOSS communities.  We acknowledge that FOSS

           communities historically have struggled on these fronts and the

           myth of “pure meritocracy” so popular in FOSS circles

           willfully ignores the systemic biases in our societies and

           cultures.  We are thus the proud home of

           the <a href="https://outreachy.org/">Outreachy initiative</a> that

           offers paid internships in FOSS for contributors who have faced

           systemic bias in their efforts to join the FOSS community.</p>

    before <a href="https://fosdem.org/2015/">FOSDEM 2015</a> begins).</p>

<p>Space for this exclusive dinner <em>is limited</em> so if you haven't

    already received an email confirming your pre-purchased ticket, <em>you should

    arrive promptly at 6:30PM tonight and have &euro;50 ready.</em>

  <p>The Supporter Night dinner includes a three-course meal and one drink.

       Attendees will be able to choose from beef or vegetarian entrees.  We

       have discussed other dietary needs with the venue, and they have

       committed to do their best to accommodate other dietary needs.  If

<p>Software Freedom Conservancy is an essential organization to free and

open source software. We are the home of over

<a href="/members/current/">30 projects</a> like

<a href="http://git-scm.org">Git</a>,

<a href="http://inkscape.org">Inkscape</a>, <a href="http://samba.org">Samba</a>,

<a href="http://winehq.org">Wine</a>, <a href="http://www.seleniumhq.org/">Selenium</a>, the <a href="/copyleft-compliance/">GPL Compliance Project for Linux

Developers</a>, <a href="http://pypy.org">PyPy</a> and

<a href="http://sugarlabs.org/">Sugar Labs</a> just to name a few. Conservancy is a "fiscal sponsor plus",

providing everything that our projects need in a nonprofit. We help our

projects defend their trademarks, manage their assets, handle donations,

improve their community management, manage risk and assist them with all

legal needs they may have. While we do receive a portion of the revenue

donated to our projects, we keep that number low enough that it doesn't

even pay for a single staff member. <a href="#donate-box" class="donate-now">Help us</a> show that you care about

<h3 id="YearInReview">Our Year in Review</h3>

<p>This has been a big year for Software Freedom Conservancy in our tireless

efforts to promote ethical technology, increase diversity and inclusion in

FOSS, continuing to fight for your rights with <a

href="https://sfconservancy.org/copyleft-compliance/">copyleft compliance</a>,

and support our incredible <a href="https://sfconservancy.org/members/current/">member projects</a>.

Our staff engaged in many invited speaking opportunities, we grew our staff,

and we continue to build community around important issues like the software

Right to Repair movement. We hosted our first large conference, <a href="https://fossy.us">FOSSY</a>,

and while we finalize details for next year, we hope to see you there to join

us in community!</p>

<p>Our <a href="https://vizio.sfconservancy.org">lawsuit against Vizio</a>— the first

lawsuit of its kind to seek <b>third party beneficiary rights to the

complete, corresponding source code under the GPL</b> is progressing!
